The Future Now
How’s your year shaping up so far? Are your dreams perfectly unfolding before you like Cleopatra unravelling herself from a coiled carpet to impress Mark Anthony? Is your true life calling resonating like a Tarzan yell in your psyche as you (“yesss!”),at last, have found your meaning and purpose in life? Do you feel you are at the very cusp of living the life, fun and loveliness you’ve seen pictured in the Boden catalogue?
Ok so we’re 6 months into the year, what did you expect? It’s like some of us are in some kind of psychic waiting room, secured a numbered ticket and are patiently biding time until life really kicks off. A few have been planting seeds but are now wondering if they’ve used the wrong fertiliser while others see only sickly weeds rather than green shoots of hope. Some of you may be ready to throw in the towel into that great laundry basket of regret, rage and disappointment it’s gone on so long. But some things really do take time. And therein lies the rub.
We want Pot Noodle life change. Instant, quick and without too much effort. And why not?
We can access information from the four corners of the globe in the click of a mouse; speed date our next partner, microwave a feast in seconds, or become an overnight sensation with a nod from Simon Cowell; waiting is so last millennium. We want the 5 items or less fast track service of life but often feel we’ve got stuck at Customer Services behind a shopper with a trolley full of damaged returns.
But no matter how much we urgently desire our dreams it’s the things you have to wait for that can hurt so dreadfully but mean so much. Things that no computer, fast buck entrepreneur or 24 hour home shopping service can deliver you. And I’ll bet each of you are waiting for something just like that right now.
The Waiting Game
There is a fine line between patience and procrastination and sometimes we need to rethink what we set in motion to bring forth an alternative result. So if watching paint dry feels like an adrenal high you’ve been waiting so long, here are a few ways to short cut the slow lane.
- Are you waiting for someone to see your brilliance, give you a promotion or for the phone to ring with a job offer? Why not make the most of where you are right now by going the extra mile, stepping up more and being the best employee you can be?
- Are you waiting for just the right chemistry to occur with someone of the opposite sex? Why not try connection instead? Chemistry is about dopamine and sex appeal which fades fast. Why not go for kindness and connection instead?
- Is the yearning for your book/radio play/band to be snapped up becoming unbearable? Try not to live just for the future and make the present as joyful and fulfilled as possible. Doubt and despair acts like Domestos on dreams. Get creative right now.
- Perhaps you are waiting for just the right time to start that diet or take up an exercise regime? When the Moon is in the 7th house and Jupiter aligned with Mars? We only have the Now and you will never have the time again. What really are you really waiting for?
Trust me I’ve been there. I’ve willed someone to “rescue” me from jobs so much that I’ve practically thrown my brain into some 4th dimension; a kind of living hell of despair and self loathing. Ever turned the external disappointments in on yourself? Hurts doesn’t it?
Like you I have wasted time mired in misery and longing, patience turning to rage and anger morphing into pity and despair. But who wants to be a victim of their dreams?
So if you are waiting for something big, better or bodacious to happen – hold it lightly, let it go, have faith, continue to live in joy in the now and trust. It takes courage to be optimistic but there is power in positivity.
Besides it’s never a waste of time if you learned something. And for the truly wise, tenacious, creative and patient – something good always does come along.
